Williams at Penn Relays

Before Rochester's Lauryn Williams wore Olympic silver around her neck, she had Penn Relays gold on her wrist.

Back when Williams was in college and competing for a win in the 100 and the gold watch that goes along with it, she was hoping to one day run with the nation's elite in the "USA vs. the World" meet. The best way to achieve that goal was to put on a show.

"I was kind of intimidated by them," Williams said yesterday. "I wanted to go and put up a big performance in front of them. I knew they'd be watching. I wanted the bigger athletes to see me and see me do well. Now, I am I guess the bigger athlete and I hope the college athletes want to see me do well."

Williams ran for Miami in 2004 when she won the 100 in 11.15 seconds. She made a bigger impression later that summer when she took the silver in the Olympics, and has earned a reputation as one of the world's top sprinters. Now she's the one who leaves the amateurs awe-struck.

"Maybe they'll have the same motivation that I had and I'll motivate them to do well tomorrow," Williams said.

While the high school and college events are the heart of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, the "USA vs. the World" event today will draw the headlines and packed crowds. Nearly 150 athletes from 10 countries -- including the women's top-ranked sprinter, Sherone Simpson of Jamaica -- will compete in the six All-Star relay events.

College athletics

Clemson revealed seven NCAA secondary violations, including an instance where an athlete's brother got free transportation, lodging and meals from an athletic booster while attending one of his sibling's road games in September.

Idaho sophomore defensive tackle Marvin C. Jones Jr. was arrested after he allegedly sold cocaine to undercover police officers. A search of Jones' apartment netted more than $1,600 in cash, including marked money that officers used in the undercover buys.

Jack Bicknell Jr., son of a former Boston College coach and the center who snapped the ball to Doug Flutie to start one of the greatest plays in history, was hired by BC as assistant head and offensive line coach.

Pro basketball

WNBA player Deanna Jackson was arrested on an assault charge after slugging an opposing player in a parking lot after a game, and will not be allowed to leave Israel until after the Chicago Sky's preseason opener. Jackson spent this winter playing for Anda Ramat Hasharon of the Israeli league.

Hockey

Eight different players scored as the Wilkes-Barrre/Scranton Penguins routed the host Norfolk Admirals, 8-1, to take a 3-2 lead in this AHL Eastern Division playoff series. Robert Nilsson had 3 assists, and Micki DuPont and Tom Gilbert each had a goal and two assists.

Boxing

Former heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison, 38, was pulled from a scheduled bout in Houston because state boxing officials didn't get results of lab tests in time. Morrison is attempting to come back after an 11-year retirement following the discovery that he was HIV positive.

Yachting

The final flights of the Louis Vuitton Cup first round-robin stage for America's Cup in Valencia, Spain, were interrupted with erratic wind, postponing the challengers series for the seventh time.
