Monessen man dies in Las Vegas accident
Monday, March 05, 2007

An educator from Monessen was killed Friday in an accident in which he was struck by three hit-and-run drivers.

Albert "Butch" Hudspith, 43, who went to Nevada to teach Psychology at Las Vegas Community College, was to begin a second job today at an elementary teacher in the Clark County School District, said his sister, Cheryl Stache of Charleroi.

"We had just talked to him about four hours before. He seemed so upbeat about starting his new job," Sandy Hudspith, the wife of Albert's father, William Hudspith, said from her home in Winston-Salem, N.C.

William Hudspith and Albert's biological mother, Shirley Hudspith of Fallowfield, could not be reached. They are in Nevada making arrangements to return their only son's remains to the Mon Valley. Albert Hudspith also is survived by his parents and two sisters.

Police in Nevada said Albert Hudspith was crossing Desert Inn Road at about 6:30 p.m. when he was struck by a Nissan Maxima whose driver later was identified as Leonard Ernst, 71, of Las Vegas.

Eyewitnesses at the scene told police that Mr. Ernst did not stop after striking Mr. Hudspith.

As the injured pedestrian lay in the street, he was run over by a Ford Sport Trac driven by Larry Hightower, 64, of Las Vegas. Mr. Hightower didn't stop, either, witnesses told police.

The two drivers later were located by investigators and interviewed. No charges have been filed.

Police still are looking for a third driver, operating a beige 1990's model full size car.

Police said Mr. Hudspith was not in a crosswalk when he first was struck.
