The preliminary hearing for an ex-convict accused of shooting an off-duty police officer was postponed yesterday after prosecutors lodged more serious charges -- including attempted homicide -- against the suspect.

Michael J. Langer, 23, was originally charged with aggravated assault in connection with a Feb. 16 incident in an alley in West View. According to the criminal complaint, 19-year-old police Officer Sean Hein, during a confrontation with Mr. Langer, was shot in the torso.
