It must be discouraging to have three players score more than 30 points and lose.
Or how about lighting up the scoreboard with 99 points and still ending up on the wrong side.
For Mount Vernon (N.Y.) High School, the No. 18-ranked boys' basketball team in the USA Today poll, both anomalies became realities yesterday as Aliquippa (19-2) earned a 108-99 overtime victory against the New York City area power.
The matchup was part of the four-game Pittsburgh High School Basketball Classic at the A.J. Palumbo Center that drew an estimated 4,000 spectators.
This game was the crown jewel, with Aliquippa's Jonathan Baldwin (40 points, 13 rebounds), Antonio Reddic (32 and 16) and Herb Pope (24 and 15) notching double-doubles.
Michael Coburn scored 32 points for Mount Vernon, while Kevin Jones and Sherrod Wright each had 31.
The Quips led by seven points with 1:40 left in regulation, but it evaporated and the game went into overtime with the score 91-91.
"I just knew what I had to do and coach [Marvin Emerson] prepared me for situations like this," said Baldwin, who had a career-high in points.
Aliquippa played without Pope for the final 8:21 of the first half after he was whistled for his second foul in the waning seconds of the first quarter, but Mount Vernon couldn't capitalize while the New Mexico State recruit was on the bench.
"They were a team, they were not dominated by two people," Mount Vernon coach Bob Cimmino said.
"They beat us as a team. They answered us offensively every step of the way and we didn't make near as many plays as we should have."
In the other games:
Led by 21 points from Terrelle Pryor and 18 from Davonte Shannon, Jeannette (13-3) defeated Chartiers Valley (14-4), 65-61. Mike Sherry paced the Colts with 25 points. Chartiers Valley took a 61-60 lead on freshman T.J. McConnell's 3-pointer with 48 seconds left. Jeannette closed on a 5-0 run for the win.
Oak Hill Academy (Va.), ranked No. 3 by USA Today, had little trouble in its 94-64 victory against Our Savior New American (N.Y.). Nolan Smith, a Duke recruit, led Oak Hill with 27 points and Alex Legion, headed to Michigan, had 26.
New Castle (11-9) got 25 points from Anthony Harvey as it turned aside Hopewell (7-12), 64-62. Ryan Turnley led the Vikings with 24 points and Drew Falletta added 17. Hopewell coach Mark Javens wasn't on the bench for the Vikings, but watched from the stands as assistant Brian Bennett guided the squad. Amid rumors he had resigned, neither Javens nor Hopewell administrators would comment on his status the remainder of the season.
