Cornerback Revis opts for NFL draft
Tuesday, January 09, 2007
Pitt cornerback Darrelle Revis has decided to forgo his senior year and enter the NFL draft, according to sources close to him.

He is expected to make a formal announcement at a news conference later this week. The deadline for underclassmen to file for early entry into the draft is Monday.

Revis, who is 6 feet, 200 pounds, is considered to be one of the top five prospects at cornerback by several scouting services and is expected to be a late first- or early second-round pick. Scouts Inc., has Revis listed as the 22nd-best prospect overall in the upcoming draft.

He finished the season with 39 tackles and two interceptions, both of which he returned for touchdowns. He also returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown in Pitt's 45-27 loss to West Virginia.

Revis, an Aliquippa graduate, will become the fifth Pitt player in the past decade to leave school early for the NFL.

The other four were wide receivers Antonio Bryant, Larry Fitzgerald and Greg Lee and safety Ramon Walker.

NOTE -- Pitt announced that defensive end McKenzie Mathews has quit the team and will transfer to another school. Mathews, a freshman from Syracuse, N.Y., who was one of the highest-rated players among the Panthers' freshman class, quit the team during training camp last year because he was homesick, but returned to the team and made 10 tackles in nine games. "McKenzie is uncertain whether he wants to continue playing football," Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt said in a statement. "He has informed us that he will transfer from Pitt, perhaps to a smaller school closer to home. We wish him well in his future pursuits."
