Mt. Lebanon commissioners hear six options for pool
Thursday, December 07, 2006

Pool consultant D. Scot Hunsaker, of Counsilman-Hunsaker, of St. Louis, gave Mt. Lebanon a rundown of six possible pool scenarios he drafted after two public meetings in hopes of helping commissioners imagine what a new aquatic center could be.

The current outdoor pool, built in 1997, is aluminum, and commissioners and municipal staff have said it's past its useful life.

The six versions could cost between $6.7 million and nearly $25 million each, although that figure assumes the pool won't be built until 2009 and calculates the estimates based on inflation.

While two options, estimated at $24.9 million and $18.1 million, are indoor pool scenarios of a 50-meter pool and a 25-meter pool, respectively, and separate leisure pools, commissioners have said they are not looking to build an indoor facility. Another variable is that the school district is likely to build some sort of indoor pool with its major high school building project, but it's not been decided what that pool would look like.

More plausible for the municipality are several outdoor scenarios. The first would include a new bathhouse, a 50-meter competitive pool and a new tot pool, very similar to what the town now has. Estimates put that version at $6.7 million.

Another option would include a new bathhouse and a 25-yard competitive pool connected to a leisure pool and a toddler water play area. That pool could cost $7.4 million.

Yet another choice would be for a new bathhouse, a 25-meter competitive pool, a separate recreational pool and a toddler water play area. That would cost about $8.1 million.

Roughly the same concept, but adding a 50-meter competitive pool, would cost $10 million.

The municipality has $5.3 million budgeted for an outdoor aquatic center.

The next public meeting is likely to be in January, when Mr. Hunsaker will give his final recommendations and more specific estimates.

Mt. Lebanon is paying the firm $32,000 to conduct the study, which includes demographic information and financial data.
