Orpik hurt, will miss Penguins season opener
Wednesday, October 04, 2006

The Penguins are preparing to open the regular season tomorrow night without defenseman Brooks Orpik, who has an injured right hand.

An examination today is expected to determine whether surgery is necessary.

Orpik was injured in a training camp scrimmage and general manager Ray Shero said its gotten progressively worse during practice.

Orpik did not practice today, but watched part of the workout from a Mellon Arena runway.

Also, Vancouver has claimed Penguins goalie Dany Sabourin, who was waived by Pittsburgh yesterday when the team cut their roster to the league limit of 23.

Sabourin has played in five NHL games and is 0-4 with a 4.42 goals against average. He is expected to back up Roberto Luongo, who likely will start the bulk of the Canucks' games.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
