For all the talk about competition for starting positions throughout preseason training camp, Penn State coach Joe Paterno will go into the opener Saturday against Akron with the starters he figured he had when practice opened more than two weeks ago.
The only changes on the depth chart are at strong safety, where senior Nolan McReady is listed alongside sophomore Anthony Scirrotto as a co-starter, and at fullback, where junior Matt Hahn is listed as the starter because senior BranDon Snow is being disciplined by Paterno for unspecified reasons. Snow, currently listed as the No. 4 fullback, is expected to regain his starting job after the first or second game.

Otherwise, the same players who completed spring practice atop the depth chart stayed there.
There were changes made to the second-team offense and defense.
The backup quarterback will be sophomore Paul Cianciolo or redshirt freshman Darryl Clark. Clark had a strong camp and is pushing for the top reserve role behind starter Anthony Morelli.
The backup tailback will be senior Austin Scott or junior Rodney Kinlaw. Both players struggled with minor injuries during camp.
Junior Chris Auletta has moved from backup left tackle to backup right tackle and redshirt freshman Dennis Landolt is now the top reserve behind Levi Brown at left tackle. Sophomore Rich Orhnberger is the backup right guard. He moved over from the left side and had been pushing senior Robert Price for the starting job.
On defense, sophomore Chris Baker moved ahead of junior Elijah Robinson from third-team to second-team defensive tackle. Sophomore Jed Hill replaced Mike Lucian as the backup behind Jim Shaw at right end. Lucian moved to offensive guard, where he is listed at third string. None of the highly touted freshmen defensive linemen are listed on the three-deep depth chart.
Redshirt freshman Jerome Hayes moved ahead of McKeesport High School graduate Dontey Brown at second-team inside linebacker. At free safety, sophomore Spencer Ridenhour is the backup while Mark Rubin recuperates from a shoulder injury.
