Recruit makes Pitt even
Tuesday, August 08, 2006

Pitt recently lost out on a tight end-offensive lineman recruit, but landed another one yesterday.

Jordan Gibbs, a 6-foot-7, 290-pound senior at Penn Manor High School near Lancaster, made a verbal commitment to Pitt. His decision came only three days after Mt. Lebanon's Andrew Devlin chose Virginia. Pitt was one of the finalists for Devlin, a tight end-offensive lineman.

Pitt recently stepped up its recruitment of Gibbs, offering him a scholarship only last week. Gibbs visited Pitt two weekends ago.

Gibbs also had scholarship offers from Virginia and Illinois, but was hoping Pitt would offer.

"I told my parents I wanted to stay in state," Gibbs said. "I just really liked the coaching staff [at Pitt] and coach [Dave] Wannstedt. He's a really good guy. Plus, I liked where the school was located."

Gibbs caught 20 passes as a junior. Although he was recruited as a tight end, he acknowledged it's very possible he could be an offensive tackle at Pitt. He runs the 40-yard dash in 5.3 seconds.
