High School Highlights: Two track titles up in the air
Friday, May 12, 2006

North Allegheny's quest for a sixth consecutive WPIAL Class AAA girls' track and field team championship has been put on hold.

The finals of the pole vault were not completed yesterday at Norwin because of safety concerns over the rain.

Norwin was leading the meet against North Allegheny, 74.5-66.5.

To win the championship, North Allegheny must take the top three places in the pole vault.

The competition will resume Monday at Norwin. Latrobe and Butler also are competing in the girls' final.

The boys' pole vault also needs to be completed. Butler and Latrobe are leading in points.

"I totally agree with the decision not to go until Monday," North Allegheny coach John Neff said.

"Our [girls] have done very well, but it's never been this close before."

Neff did not want to use the wet conditions as an excuse for his team's championship streak being in jeopardy.

"I take my hat off to the team from Norwin," he said. "[Complaining about the weather] doesn't get you anywhere."

Class AA track

In the team finals at South Side Beaver, the host Rams won the boys' title, defeating Center, 91.5-58.5; Washington, 94-56; and Mars, 93-57.

On the girls' side at South Side Beaver, Greensburg Central Catholic defeated Center, 78-70; Mohawk, 79.5-69.5; and Quaker Valley, 85-64.

Class AAA tennis

Upper St. Clair won its sixth Class AAA boys' team championship in 12 seasons, defeating Pine-Richland in the final, 4-1, at the Club for Life in Monroeville.

City League

The boys' tennis doubles semifinals will be an all-Allderdice affair today at the Club for Life.

Also, the field portion of the City League track and field championships were postponed until 3 p.m. today at Oliver High School.
