People On the Move

Profile of the Week

James J. Lamb

•  Job: President, Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh

•  Age: 45

•  Ambitions: Be a great father and husband; work toward a "just peace" in Ireland; and serve the disadvantaged.

•  First job: Maintenance worker at the Meadows Race Track (1977)

•  Hardest job/why?: My current position, for two reasons:

1. My predecessor (Sr. Michele O'Leary, who passed away in September) left big shoes to fill; and 2. Ireland's astounding economic success has compelled the institute to rethink its mission, strategic planning and operations. Thankfully, scores of bright people in Ireland and in Pittsburgh, especially our board of directors and staff, have committed to helping me with these and other challenges.

•  Biggest work challenge ever: Convincing Ireland and Western Pennsylvania that each still has something to offer the other. After 15 years, having served more than 1,500 visiting students to Pittsburgh, more than 100 companies and other organizations traveling in both directions, and having offered more than 500 seminars in mutual understanding and conflict resolution, affecting thousands, directly and indirectly by our work, this challenge remains.

•  Favorite stock/mutual fund: American Funds Cap World Growth and Income.

•  Away from work I: Play in a local Irish folk band (Guaranteed Irish), study at CMU's Heinz School, obsess over the Steelers and golf poorly.

•  Dream vacation: With my extended family to any beach.

•  Favorite book: "Trinity," by Leon Uris

•  If I won the Lottery, I'd: Buy property in Ireland, and in Stone Harbor, N.J.
