North Strabane
Supervisors approved a four-year agreement with township police calling for a 5 percent annual pay increase.
The new contract, approved 4-0 and through Dec. 31, 2009, a patrolman's salary will increase from $22.66 an hour the first year to $26.23 the last year.
For the first time, police officers will have to contribute to their health care premiums. The co-pay will be $18 in 2006, $24 in 2007, $30 in 2008 and $36 in 2009. The contract also entitles officers to an additional holiday bringing the total number of paid holidays to 11.
Robinson
Robert B. Goodall, an outspoken critic of supervisors in the northern Washington County township, has launched a write-in campaign for a six-year supervisor seat in Robinson.
Mr. Goodall said he decided to vie for the seat after township negotiations with a proposed power plant started to concern him.
"There are some things that I feel are hurting my community and I feel I need to do something about it," Mr. Goodall said.
The 71-year-old coal strip miner who spent much of his life running his own construction business was a Hanover supervisor from 1972-78. A registered Democrat, Goodall moved to Robinson in 1990 and ran unsuccessfully for supervisor in 1997.
This time, Goodall faces incumbent George M. Lucchino, a Democrat, and Republican candidate James M. Margerum. Neither faced opposition in the primary.
Union
Supervisors on Monday unanimously accepted the resignation of Walt Lang, who has moved out of the township and has stopped attending meetings in July.
In a letter dated Oct. 14, Lang stated he was resigning because his disagreement with political policies, the disbandment of the police force and personal safety issues have prevented him from performing his job correctly.
The board must appoint someone to fill the remaining two years of his term.
