STATE COLLEGE -- Dan Wise scored on a 10-yard run with 1:11 to play as Grove City beat Tyrone, 21-17, in the PIAA Class AA semifinals yesterday at Memorial Field.
Grove City (11-2) will be making its first appearance in the PIAA final Saturday against Lansdale Catholic (13-1).
Tyrone (12-2) had a chance to score late in the game, but Adam Rudolph picked off a Leonard Wilson pass at the Grove City 27 with 28 seconds to play.
Tyrone had taken a 17-14 lead with five minutes to play on Wilson's 1-yard run. Wilson passed for 132 yards for Tyrone.
Grove City opened the scoring on Jack Vallely's 12-yard first-quarter run, but the extra point was blocked.
Tyrone took the lead on Brice Mertiff's 51-yard touchdown run.
He finished with 124 yards on 18 carries.
Grove City regained the lead with 1:30 left in the first half on Jim Jaskowak's 9-yard run.
Jaskowak led the Eagles in rushing with 61 yards and threw for 109 yards.
The Golden Eagles, who were seeking their fourth trip to the PIAA championship since 1996, drew within 14-10 at halftime on Ben Gummo's 22-yard field goal as time expired.
