Prosecutors, law enforcement honored
Wednesday, November 24, 2004

Two federal prosecutors and five federal law enforcement officers from Pittsburgh were among 224 people honored for outstanding work last week by the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys in Washington, D.C., which is headed by U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tina Miller, lead prosecutor for child exploitation and child pornography cases, won for pursuing crimes against children, particularly the prosecutions of Scott Tyree and Scott Hayward.

Tyree, of Virginia, is serving a 19-year sentence for luring a 13-year-old Pittsburgh girl to run away with him and engage in bondage.

Hayward, a former cheerleading coach from Coraopolis, was convicted of taking three cheerleaders to London to molest them. He is awaiting a new sentence after his first was overturned on appeal.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Houghton, who handles forfeiture, won for her work as team leader on "Operation Pipe Dreams," a nationwide prosecution of drug paraphernalia dealers, including actor Tommy Chong, that started in Pittsburgh.

Also honored for that investigation were these local federal officers: Chief U.S. Deputy Marshal Gary Richards; Rhonda Wilburn, supervisor of seized assets for the U.S. Marshals Service; Deputy U.S. Marshal Geoffrey Bond; U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Group Supervisor Brian Averi and DEA task force Officer Richard Szurlej.
