Ridership up on light-rail Library line
Wednesday, October 06, 2004

The Library light-rail transit route, which includes the newly overhauled Overbrook line, has been attracting a lot more customers.

The Overbrook addition started at the beginning of June and has increased ridership for the Library cars by 52 percent over the previous year's, said Bob Grove, Port Authority spokesman.

But don't bring out the champagne to celebrate the Overbrook success story yet.

The South Hills Village garage construction has caused some riders to use the Library T instead, Grove said. The Library T gets riders to town a lot more quickly due to the newly added route and stations.

Also, the rider statistics for September and October are more typical of regular ridership than during the summer months, when some transit users are on vacation.

However, August statistics for the Library T show an increase from 3,861 in 2003 to 5,879 in 2004.

But overall, T ridership has declined by 7 percent during the past three years because of the struggling economy.

In August, the South Hills Village line's ridership declined by 9 percent.

The new Lytle park-n-ride lot in Bethel Park is full every day, Grove said.

The Library park-n-ride, which is farther away, usually has 150 to 200 spaces filled. There are 440 spaces there.

Port Authority officials are looking forward to the construction of the South Hills garage to spur more ridership for the 42S cars.
