The awards, which will be presented May 24 in Harrisburg, recognize the impact women business owners and business leaders make in creating jobs and building communities in Pennsylvania, state Secretary of Community and Economic Development Dennis Yablonsky said.

"Women are making dynamic contributions to our vision for a new Pennsylvania," he said.

Eight of the area winners are from Allegheny County, the most of any county.

Winners were selected by a panel of judges based on dedication to business growth, professional and personal accomplishments, community involvement and advocacy for women in business.

To qualify, a nominee had to be a resident of Pennsylvania or employed in the state, and hold a position with significant decision-making authority, such as owner, partner, president, chief executive officer, board chair or senior executive manager.

Winners in Allegheny County are: Connie Conboy, vice president, Bayer Corp.; Debra Fox, owner/CEO, Fox Learning Systems Inc.; Mary Francis Gargotta, executive vice president, Marc USA Inc.; Melanie B. Gefert, senior executive vice president, ATM Corp. of America; Michele R. McGough, founder/CEO, Solutions4networks; Georgiana N. Riley, owner/CEO, Tigg Corp.; Lois A. Bradley, CEO, The Bradley Partnerships; and Susan Tusick, founder and principal, Tusick & Associates Architectures.

Other local winners include: Debra L. Rhone, vice president, National City Bank of Pennsylvania, and Elaine Cribbs Rizza, president, The Rizza Group P.C., both in Washington County; and Angela Rose-O'Brien, owner, Inspiring Times Family Publications, Westmoreland County.

According to the Center for Women's Business Research, there are 218,000 female-owned firms in the state, employing roughly 289,000 and generating nearly $41.1 billion in sales.
