Luke Getsy might not be the favorite to win the Pitt starting quarterback job, but he's certainly not acting -- nor playing -- like he's the underdog.
The Panthers had their final full scrimmage yesterday before the spring game Saturday, and Getsy, who is battling fellow sophomore Tyler Palko for the job, had an excellent day, slightly outperforming Palko.
Statistics weren't kept for the game, but Getsy made a lot of nice throws, including one to Greg Lee for a touchdown, and he received rave reviews for his efforts from head coach Walt Harris.
"I thought Luke was much more competitive than he had been," said Harris, when asked about the competition between the two quarterbacks. "He was more competitive in terms of the consistency of executing our system."
Harris said neither quarterback was clearly ahead in the position battle and that it likely won't be solved until August.
He was, however, pleased with the progress the offense has made since the previous scrimmage, although it still has a long way to go.
Kirkley excels
Another player drawing praises from Harris was running back Raymond Kirkley, who is battling Jawan Walker for the starting tailback spot. Walker fumbled the ball early in the scrimmage and didn't have a strong outing.
"I thought Ray did a great job today," Harris said. "He ran hard, he ran physical and he didn't turn the ball over. That's the key; he ran aggressively but showed he won't turn the ball over when he gets hit."
Short snaps
Harris said that freshman Mike McGlynn has outplayed junior Dale Williams so far in the battle for the starting right tackle job. "Dale has been here for three years, so he needs to pick it up. You'd rather not have to start a redshirt freshman on the line, but so far Mike has been better." ... Sophomore receivers Greg Lee and Terrell Allen had highlight-worthy touchdown catches. Harris on Lee's catch: "That reminded me a little bit of [Larry Fitzgerald]." ... The place-kicking was inconsistent yesterday, as was the protection for the kicker. ... A number of potential recruits attended the scrimmage including Duquesne running back Shane Brooks and Seton-LaSalle quarterback Bill Stull, who are among the top juniors in the WPIAL.
