Boys' Basketball: Butler upends Beaver Falls in OT

The Blackhawk boys' basketball holiday tournament has had its share of memorable games in recent years.

The first game this season added to that list of classic contests when Butler upset Beaver Falls, 73-69, in overtime.

Tyrell Sales, a Penn State football recruit, led the Golden Tornado (6-3) with 30 points. Sales was 12 for 14 from the floor with 10 rebounds to offset the 23-point performance of Beaver Falls sophomore guard Lance Jeter.

Jeter scored 11 of Beaver Falls' 14 points in the fourth quarter. Jeter attempted a 3-point shot in the final seconds of regulation but missed.

The score was 60-60 at the end of regulation. Butler's Danny Anderassi came off the bench to score five overtime points. Nate Hartung added 15 points for Butler. Beaver Falls (7-3) missed 17 of 31 free throws.

Beaver Falls is ranked third in WPIAL Class AA by the Post-Gazette.

Other top boys' games

James Hairston led Class AAAA Section 2 leader Connellsville (9-2) to a 63-54 victory against the host team at the Blackhawk tournament. Hairston led the Cougars with 22 points. Blackhawk (3-8) lost for the fifth consecutive time.

In another first round contest at the Blackhawk tournament, Class AAA Ellwood City (7-4) upset Kennedy Catholic (8-2), 43-41. Kennedy Catholic is regarded as one of the top Class A teams in the state.

Zac Northen scored 25 points to lead West Allegheny (8-2) to a 46-34 victory against Burrell (6-3) in the first round of the Drill for Skill tournament at La Roche College. West Allegheny led at halftime, 24-13. The Indians have won seven of its past eight games.

Central Catholic remained undefeated, blowing out East Lake, Fla., 78-39, in the first round of the Hooters Holiday Shootout at St. Petersburg, Fla. Daniel Waajid led the Vikings (10-0) with 14 points. Central Catholic led 51-15 at halftime. Central Catholic is ranked No. 1 in WPIAL Class AAAA. Central Catholic was winless at the Hooters Holiday Shootout the previous two years.

Craig Hriblan's 3-pointer with five seconds left enabled Albert Gallatin (8-3) to edge Valley (9-2) in the first round of the Shady Side Academy tournament, 72-70. Hriblan led Albert Gallatin with 18 points. Nate Turner, a 6-4 freshman, added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Colonials. Chris Miller led Valley with 22 points with Steve Ross adding 19. Andre Matthews contributed 18 for the Vikings who had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Baldwin (8-2) defeated Allderdice (6-4), 50-41, in the Shady Side tournament Ryan Einwag led Baldwin with 20 points, scoring 14 in the second half.

Fritz Woelfel's 24 points led Shady Side Academy (5-5) to a 73-63 victory against Seton-LaSalle (4-7) at the Shady Side tournament.

Highlands remained winless after losing, 50-40, to Bethel Park in the first round of the Shady Side Academy tournament. Drew West led Bethel Park with 11 points. The Black Hawks (7-4) have won three in a row. Highlands fell to 0-10.

Geibel (7-3) toppled California, 70-63, in the first round of the Charleroi Federal Classic. Rob Ramsey led the Gators with 19 points with Kellen Holmes adding 17. Woody Stewart of California (5-7) led all scorers with 21. California played without its top scorer, Dan DeMoss who averages 19.9 points per game. DeMoss was suspended for one game because of technical foul violations in the previous game.

Upsets

South Park (5-4) rallied in the fourth quarter to edge City League leader Peabody (7-2), 56-54, in the first round of the North Allegheny tournament. Greg Freund led South Park with 14 points while Bill Torre and Ricky Kesich added 13 points each. Peabody, which lost its second consecutive game, was led by Dan Davis with 18 points. South Park outscored Peabody, 22-14, in the fourth quarter.

Neshannock (7-4) wasted an 18-point lead going into the fourth quarter and lost, 50-49, to host West Middlesex of a first round holiday tournament game. Neshannock was outscored, 23-4, in the fourth quarter. Josh Holzworth led West Middlesex with 12 points, making two free throws with 20 seconds left to give the host team its first lead since early in the first quarter. Neshannock led, 45-27, at the end of three quarters.

Stars of the night

Washington's Ramone Barnes led the Little Prexies to a 63-61 non-section victory at South Fayette (6-4). Barnes led Washington (6-4) with 27 points. Barnes scored 14 in the third quarter when it outscored South Fayette, 19-6 to break away from a 22-19 halftime lead.

Cody Blystone scored 30 points to lead Elderton (2-8) to a 58-43 victory at Redbank Valley at the West Shamokin tournament. Elderton broke an eight-game losing streak.

For the record

Coach Danny Holzer became the winningest coach in Panther boys' basketball history as Upper St. Clair rallied to edge Fox Chapel, 55-54, in the first round of the North Allegheny tournament. Holzer has a record of 142-77 in nine seasons at Upper St. Clair to surpass the previous record of 141 wins by Fred Lese. Sean Lee led the Panthers with 20 points. Fox Chapel led 44-38 going into the fourth quarter.
