HERSHEY, Pa. -- Senior forward Lauren Ginnona scored the only goal of the game, on her team's first shot, to give Owen J. Roberts a 1-0 victory against Butler in the PIAA Class AAA final yesterday afternoon in Hershey.
"We can play any kind of soccer they want," said Owen J. Roberts coach Joe Margusity, whose team finished 24-3-1.
"If a team want to get physical we will too. We heard Butler was physical and were prepared to deal with it. I thought our team really showed that they could battle today."
The only goal came eight minutes into the contest when Ginnona settled a loose ball 45 yards from the goal, darted up the middle of the field and beat Butler goalkeeper Jessica Onufer, who had come off her line on the play.
"Given another chance, I would like to have that play again," said Onufer, who made seven saves after allowing the goal. "A breakaway is the worst kind of shot to have to face."
Butler (21-3-2) had two great chances to tie the score midway through the first half.
With a little more than 23 minutes left before halftime, Owen J. Roberts junior goaltender Anna Bevan stopped a low shot from Butler midfielder Katie Richey. The rebound ricocheted to Jenny Kienzle, who was also turned away by Bevan.
"I just tried to stay calm when the ball was bouncing around," said Bevan, who allowed just 11 goals all season while posting 18 shutouts.
"My defense did a great job to help me out back there and we just knew that we all had to stay calm when they got their chances."
Eight minutes later, Bevan made her most impressive save of the game.
Butler's leading scorer, 6-foot-1 senior forward Annie Lowry, came in all alone against Bevan on a breakaway. Bevan darted out from the goal and slid feet first, jarring the ball free from Lowry.
"[Lowry] is terrific and to be able to hold her down is a great showing by our defense," Margusity said. "We told Anna [Bevan] before the game that she had to make all the saves she should and one that we didn't expect her to. That save on the breakaway was the one we didn't expect her to make. I think she might have showed today that she is the best goalie in the state."
With 13 minutes left in the game, Butler squandered another opportunity.
Lowry won the ball at midfield, broke free down the left sideline before cutting into the middle about 20 yards from the goal.
She played the ball onto the foot of Richey, who got off a quick shot from 9 yards, but Bevan knocked it away.
