Has Lexus finally invented the perfect sport utility vehicle?
A lot of car writers and consumers seem to think so, based on their reactions to the Lexus RX330 which just hit the market.
It's got just about every technical gizmo you can think of, it's easy to drive--and oh, yes--powerful as all get out.
Yep, that's a new word heard in connection with any Lexus other than their IS-300 sports sedan. But equipped with a 230-horsepower 3.3-liter V-6, the RX330 rockets to 60 in anywhere between 7.3 to 7.8 seconds--and that ain't slackin.'
The technical feature that seems to be getting the most ink is the headlight system in the car, which moves as the car turns, better illuminating your way around corners.
Then there's the back-up parking system which, by use of a camera, shows you what's behind you before you move. And there's a vehicle stability control system which is designed to help you control the loss of lateral traction while cornering.
Prices for the RX 330 run in the mid to high $30,000 figures.
The other big news for Lexus is the handsome new Lexus GX 470, a sport utility vehicle that slots neatly between the Rx 330 and the LX 470.
Powered by a double overhead cam 4.7-liter, 235-horsepower V-8, the GX 470 is packed to the roof rack with all kinds of systems and features that make it a paragon of stability, off-road capability and handling ease. Equipment includes anti-lock brakes, active traction control, downhill assist control, hill-start assist control, brake assist, vehicle skid control, adaptive variable suspension damping and more.
The GX 470 is designed to carry eight passengers with an optional rear seat, and as you might expect, the standard equipment list is a lengthy one.
Automatic climate control, leather seats, premium audio system with a six-disc in-dash CD changer, steering wheel audio controls, memory system for the drivers seat, steering wheel position and outside mirrors; heated front seats and an overhead console with integrated HomeLink transmitter. Expect to pay about $45,000 or so for the GX 470.
