Infiniti's luxury SUV a groundbreaker

Sorry, Buzz Lightyear.

Forget about those rocket packs on your back. If you want to go to "infinity and beyond," there's only one way to get there in style and speed -- Infiniti.

Nissan's luxury line has really been making waves of late with its outstanding new product line. First it was the G-35 sedan, which is giving BMW's 3 Series fits -- and at a lower price, too. Then there was the companion, the Infiniti G-35 coupe, which, if anything, is an even stronger performer than the sedan.

It has single-handedly resurrected the coupe market in one fell swoop.

The SUV's design is highlighted by a steeply sloped roof and huge tires. The FX45 is powered by a 315-horsepower V-8 engine.

Now comes the "bionic cheetah," as it's known -- the Infiniti FX 35 and 45, two of the most outrageous luxury sports utilities anywhere. It's a real conversation starter, and people either love or hate its edgy, over-the top style. I love it -- and have ever since I saw the first one on the turntable at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. Lexus just introduced a concept model which looks just like it --thus validating the FX as a genuine style leader and groundbreaker.

It's an aggressive, brutish looking design, like a cat in steel -- a bionic cheetah. The design is highlighted by a steeply sloped roof and huge tires with the biggest aluminum road wheels you've ever seen. There's just no missing this one.

The FX35 and 45 are highly competitive, with the FX45 powered by a 315-horsepower version V-8 that hits 60 in an incredible -- for an SUV -- 6.3 seconds, according to Car & Driver. Inside, you'll find swaths of leather in a Euro-style interior and the usual brushed aluminum accents, and it seats five in style and comfort. It handles like its on railroad tracks, but car journalists say the ride is on the rough side on uneven surfaces, and cargo room inside is limited.

No matter, the FX35 and FX45 give Infiniti yet two more "halo" products guaranteed to bring more buyers into the showroom -- as if the company needed more halo products with some of the rest of its lineup.

Prices start at about $37,000 with the FX35, which comes with a smaller 280-horsepower V-6.

If midsize high-performance sedans fit your fancy, you might want to check out the M45, which slots neatly in between the G35 on the low end and the Q45 at the upper end. The M45 is an elegant four door with knife edge styling along its unadorned slab sides.

Taking a page from the historic use of big engines in small sedans that were a hallmark of the muscle car era, the M45 is powered by the larger Q45's 340-horsepower V-8, and it will nail 60 in less than 6 seconds. It has a sport-tuned chassis, and it's rear-wheel drive, seating five passengers. Base price is $42,845.

Inside the M45 has the same kind of hushed, contemporary, Zen-like interior design that has long been a hallmark of the Infiniti lineup. It has intelligent cruise control which automatically maintains a distance from the car in front, plus heated and cooled seats and a navigation system.
