General NIE Program (September-June)

Teachers may order newspapers at a discounted rate for general classroom use. When ordered in sets of 5 or more per delivery, the educational rate is 17.5 cents per paper. Newspapers may be ordered for any length of time and for any combination of days, Sunday through Friday. For example, a teacher may want 5 copies delivered Monday through Friday from September through June, while another may want 25 copies every Monday from December through February. The General NIE program is very flexible and will accommodate the teacher, allowing for days of non-delivery during holidays, etc.

Literacy Month (September)

Celebrate National Literacy Day in September -- all month. Curriculum guides feature motivating lessons for students with high-interest levels and low reading ability. The guides cover all subject areas and are recommended for students in grades K-12. Classroom sets of newspapers are provided daily, Sunday - Friday, throughout the month.

No Child Left Behind (October - December)

In response to No Child Left Behind, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Educational Services Department is offering a program for grades 3-8 which reinforces the academic standards covered on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests. Basic language arts and mathematics standards are covered through innovative newspaper activities that make learning exciting and enjoyable! We encourage you to use our No Child Left Behind program to strengthen those skills your students are required to know.

Festival of Events (October-March)

The Festival of Events program reinforces skills taught in grades 1-5. Teachers receive newspaper-based curriculum guides from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that focus on theater, acting, storytelling, etc. Classroom sets of the Sunday Post-Gazette are provided weekly.

National Geography Awareness Week (November)

Celebrate National Geography Awareness Week with the Post-Gazette and the National Geographic Society. The program includes curriculum guides that enhance geography concepts. Also, teachers and students are encouraged to visit the National Geographic Society's Web site at www.nationalgeographic.com/gaw. The site contains lesson plans and student activities that follow the Geography Awareness Week theme.

Winter Holidays (November-December)

The Winter Holidays program covers the history and traditions of the winter holidays using a multi-cultural approach. Newspaper activities relating to Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and observances of the Chinese, Muslim and Hindu people are included. Winter Holidays is recommended for grades 3-8.

PG Current Events (January)

PG Current Events uses local, national and international news to increase student awareness of current events and issues. The four-week program for grades 6-12 provides classroom sets of the Post-Gazette and a curriculum guide with compatible newspaper activities.

Black History Month (January – March)

Black History Month honors the triumphs and achievements of African Americans. Throughout the month of February, My Generation, a feature found in the comics section, runs articles that focus on Black Americans and the issues confronting them. A curriculum guide containing follow-up newspaper activities is provided to participating teachers. Black History Month is written for grades 4-10.

NIE Week (March)

Newspaper in Education Week celebrates the newspaper in the classroom with a variety of creative activities for students in grades K-12. Curriculum guides focusing on newspapers and the media are made available to educators.

National Nutrition Month (March)

National Nutrition Month concentrates on various aspects of health, including nutrition, exercise and healthful life choices. Written for grades 6-12, the Nutrition Month program is based upon Wednesday’s Health & Science section, Thursday’s Food & Flavor section and Sunday’s Food section.

PG Math (March – May)

The PG Math program reinforces math concepts taught in grades 4-10. Accompanying guides cover skills such as computation, estimation, problem solving, graphing, understanding fractional parts and many more.

Safety Smarts (April – May)

Safety Smarts is a program that offers safety tips and practices for students in grade K-6. Newspaper activities in the supplements stress safety issues with bikes, in cars, in homes, on the school playground, as well as practical ideas for personal safety.

PG Science (April – May)

The PG Science program focuses on current and interesting science topics for students in grades 4-10. Topics covered include ecology, medicine, technology and computers. Curriculum guides present newspaper activities that can be used at anytime during the school year.

Summer School (June-August)

Through sponsorship funding, we are able to provide newspapers on a flexible schedule to area summer school programs. In addition to the newspapers, we offer curriculum materials suitable for each grade level and subject area.
