Basketball Highlights: Upper St. Clair girls upset

Butler wins 52-49, for second in a row against Top 5 team

Butler recorded its second upset of a WPIAL Class AAAA top-five ranked girls' basketball team this season when the Golden Tornado (6-5) won at No. 3 Upper St. Clair (9-2) last night, 52-49.

Kim Nowakowski led Butler with 18 points. Adria Matonak added 12 to offset a 16-point effort by USC's Leigh Sulkowski. Butler trailed, 35-32, at the end of three quarters, but outscored Upper St. Clair, 20-14, in the fourth quarter.

Butler upset No. 5 Seneca Valley Dec. 17 in a Section 3 contest.

Butler, one of the top teams in Section 3 with a 3-1 record, has an important league game at home against Ambridge Monday.

Class AAAA girls'

Ambridge 57, North Allegheny 55: Ambridge (10-1, 4-1) took possession of first place in Section 3 with a home win against North Allegheny (9-2, 2-2). North Allegheny rallied from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit by hitting four 3-pointers late in the game to tie the score, 55-55, with 14 seconds left. But Ambridge guard Kelly Calderone drove the length of the court and hit a layup with one second remaining. Calderone finished with 14 points. Callie Iordifo led Ambridge with 19 points. Laura Dudas led North Allegheny with 17 points, which included three 3-pointers in the last quarter.

Class AAA girls'

Valley 59, Mars 49: Amanda Booker's 16 points paced No. 3 Valley (10, 5-0) to a win against Mars (8-6, 2-2) in Section 1. Leslie Pinkerton led Mars with 25 points. The score was tied, 23-23, at halftime. Valley pulled away by outscoring Mars, 20-13, in the fourth quarter.

Class AA girls'

Chartiers-Houston 51, Bentworth 24: The Buccaneers got 23 points from Tami Romano to defeat Bentworth in Section 5. Char-Houston (10-2, 4-1) has won four games in a row. Center Emily Briggs, the leading scorer for Char-Houston at 23 points per game, is out indefinitely with a broken wrist.

Carmichaels 49, Charleroi 44: The Mikes (11-1, 5-0) remained unbeaten in Section 5 with an overtime win at Charleroi (8-5, 3-2). Heather Carson led Charleroi with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Carson's two free throws with 17 seconds left sent the game into overtime. Jessica McMinn led the Mikes with 15 points. Autumn Willis added 11, including four points in overtime when Carmichaels outscored Charleroi, 9-4.

Fort Cherry 52, Mapletown 41: Courtney Steding's 17 points led Fort Cherry (9-3) to a non-league win against the Class A Maples (3-8). Steding became the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,435 points, four more than 2001 graduate Raelyn Miles.

Vincentian 90, Freedom 19: The No. 1 Royals had six players score in double figures in a Section 6 rout against Freedom. Shaunna Ambrose led Vincentian (10-1, 5-0) with 18 points.

Class A girls'

Union 68, Farrell 67: Samantha Naples' winning shot at the buzzer provided Union (4-8, 1-3) with an overtime victory against Farrell (1-11, 1-4) in Section 1. Karlyn Busby led Union with 25 points. Jada Hines added 20. Farrell has lost seven consecutive games.

Monessen 59, Our Lady Sacred Heart 32: No. 4 Monessen trailed, 14-11, at the end of the first period before using a 15-2 run to win a Section 3 game against the Chargers. Charel Allen led the Greyhounds with 20 points.

Monaca 74, Aliquippa 34: Kristin Kalervo's 33 points led the No. 1 Indians (9-2, 4-0) to a rout of the Quips (0-12, 0-4) in Section 1.

Clairton 64: Geibel 26: Kamela Gissendanner had 22 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals and four blocked shots to lead the No. 2 Bears (6-5, 2-0) to a win against Geibel (3-7, 1-1) in Section 2.

Class AAAA boys'

Chartiers Valley 73, Montour 67: The visiting Colts used a 25-10 run in the second quarter to win a Section 5 game at Montour (7-4, 2-3). Jerry Harness led Chartiers Valley (10-1, 3-0) with 19 points. Ray Diffo was the top scorer for Montour with 20.

Baldwin 47, Mt. Lebanon 46: Gavin Prosser's 17 points paced visiting Baldwin (7-6, 1-3) to an upset of No. 5 Mt. Lebanon (11-2, 3-1) in Section 5. Tim Lydon added 13 points for the Highlanders. Chris Pinch led the Blue Devils with 15 points. An apparent winning shot by Mt. Lebanon at the buzzer was disallowed. Baldwin has won four in a row and snapped Mt. Lebanon's five-game winning streak.

Greensburg Salem 64, Franklin Regional 58: Damon Bogan's 23 points led the Golden Lions (10-3, 5-0) to victory at Franklin Regional (4-7, 1-4) in Section 1. Greensburg Salem led, 29-20, at halftime.

Kiski Area 68, Latrobe 55: Curt Kiebler led the Cavaliers (10-3, 4-1) with 15 points during their win against Latrobe in Section 1. Mike Rairigh added 13 points. Kiski Area led, 24-8, at the end of the first quarter.

Class AAA boys'

Keystone Oaks 70, East Allegheny 49: The Eagles (8-4, 3-1) took a 20-point lead in the first quarter en route to victory against the Wildcats (3-10, 1-4) in Section 4. Dan Muto led Keystone Oaks with 13 points. Four other Eagles players reached double figures.

Elizabeth Forward 61, South Park 52: The Warriors (7-5,.2-3) rallied from a 4-point halftime deficit to defeat South Park (1-11, 1-2) in Section 4. Kamden Leger, a Duquesne University recruit, led Elizabeth Forward with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. The Warriors have won four in a row while South Park has lost six consecutive contests.
