- 1 cup shortening
- 2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup sour milk, see note
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups broken pecans
- 2 cups candied cherry halves
- 2 cups chopped dates
Cream together shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and milk and beat well.
Sift together flour, soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture and blend well. Add remaining ingredients. Drop from a teaspoon onto lightly greased baking sheets. Bake in a 400-degree preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Yield: About 7 dozen cookies.
Note: Use buttermilk. Or if you don't have buttermilk on hand, you can sour milk by adding 1 teaspoon of white vinegar to 1 cup milk and let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.
