Pittsburgh Post-Gazette hires new sports editor

Pittsburgh, January 14, 2004 – The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has hired Jerry Micco to be Assistant Managing Editor – Sports with a start date of March 15.

Micco joins the Post-Gazette from the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek, Calif., where he is currently the sports editor, overseeing the coverage of five professional sports teams in the Bay area. In his new role, he will oversee the Post-Gazette’s award winning sports department with a staff of 35.

"Jerry is a terrific newsman, a wonderful fellow and a creative leader, and we’re delighted to have him here in Pittsburgh," said Post-Gazette vice president and executive editor David Shribman. "Our hope is that he will take a terrific sports section and make it even more compelling."

Micco’s career in print journalism spans nearly two and a half decades. He’s worked for several newspapers including The Daily Press in Newport News, Va., The Orlando Sentinel, and three smaller papers in Virginia. Micco is the first vice president of the Associated Press Sports Editors group and will assume the organization’s presidency in the spring.

Micco replaces Fritz Huysman, who has led the Post-Gazette's sports department for more than ten years. Huysman will remain assistant managing editor at the paper, overseeing sports special sections and Internet sports coverage.
