Local Pittsburgher honored at national level

PITTSBURGH, June 20, 2005 – The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is pleased to announce that Robert Robinson is the Jefferson Award winner who will represent the Western PA region at the National Jefferson Awards in Washington, D.C.

Robinson was one of seven people or families honored as a Jefferson Award Winner by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Comcast, and the Pittsburgh Foundation. These seven were chosen from the forty-seven Community Champions who were honored in 2004 for their steadfast volunteer service to the community.

A Community Champion is a volunteer making a difference in the lives of the people in our community. It’s the ordinary people doing extraordinary things without expectation of reward. The Jefferson Awards are the Nobel Prize for Volunteer Service and are presented on two levels: national and local. This award was established to encourage and honor individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service.

Robert Robinson cleverly uses the game of golf to teach the rules of life to students seven through eighteen years of age. The West Penn Minority Golf Association (WPMJGA) is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization that Robert founded eight years ago. The students learn the game while they learn etiquette and social skills that will be used for a lifetime.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is Western Pennsylvania’s largest newspaper and www.post-gazette.com is the region’s most visited web site. Together they reach more than one million people every week. The Post-Gazette has served the Pittsburgh community, its readers and advertisers as the region’s indispensable source of news, advertising and information for more than two centuries.
